ChatGPT or NotebookLM?
NotebookLM works only with the sources you upload, and that limitation is its strength: it barely makes things up and cites where each answer comes from. ChatGPT knows about everything but can be confidently wrong. To study from your own notes, NotebookLM; for anything else, ChatGPT.

The differences that actually matter
One answers from memory, the other only from your sources
This is the decisive difference for studying. NotebookLM answers only from the documents you upload and cites the exact passage, so if something is not there, it says so. ChatGPT answers from what it learned and can fill gaps by inventing, with the same confidence it uses when it is right.
What you can upload
NotebookLM is built for accumulating material: dozens of PDFs, slide decks, videos and notes in one notebook, answering questions across all of it. ChatGPT accepts files but the approach is more one-off conversation than study library.
What ChatGPT does and NotebookLM does not
Outside studying from your own notes, ChatGPT is far broader: it writes, codes, generates images and solves problems on topics you never gave it. NotebookLM is a specialised tool and does not try to step outside that.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for studying from notes?
NotebookLM, by a fair margin. Because it answers only from your documents and cites where each point comes from, the risk of studying an invented fact drops sharply. And that risk is especially serious when studying, because by definition you cannot spot the error.
Does NotebookLM make things up?
Far less, because it is limited to the sources you give it and links every claim to its origin. It is not infallible — it can misread a paragraph — but the error is checkable in one click, which is exactly what you do not get from an assistant answering from memory.
