NotebookLM is Google's tool for researching and studying from your own documents: you upload sources (PDFs, web pages, videos, notes) and the AI answers questions citing those sources, generates summaries, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes and even podcasts (Audio Overviews) and explainer videos. Essential for students and researchers.

What NotebookLM is like in practice
Where it stands out
It answers only from the documents you upload and cites the exact passage each point comes from. For studying, that sharply reduces the risk of learning an invented fact, which is especially serious when studying because by definition you cannot spot it. It also cross-references dozens of sources in one notebook.
Where it falls short
It never leaves what you give it: for finding new material it is useless, and its reliability is exactly that of the documents you upload. If the material is weak, the answer will be weak. And although it cites, it can misread a paragraph: the link is there to check, not for decoration.
How its pricing works
The free version has notebook and source limits that suffice for studying a subject or preparing a full topic, and it is among the tools with the best ratio between what it gives free and what the rest costs. Limits change often: check them before organising a whole course around it.
