The differences that actually matter
They are not competing at the same thing
Perplexity is a search engine that answers: every claim comes with a linked source and its goal is to replace traditional search. ChatGPT is an assistant that also searches. To find something out and be able to check it, Perplexity gets straight to the point. To produce something — write, code, analyse a file — ChatGPT does things Perplexity does not attempt.
Sources change how you use it
Having a link on every sentence is not cosmetic: it lets you verify in one click and quickly discard a poorly grounded answer. With an assistant answering from memory you have to check it yourself elsewhere. For research, academic work or anything you will cite, that difference saves far more time than it looks.
What happens when the question is not a search
Ask Perplexity to rewrite an email or debug a function and it will answer, but that is not where it shines. ChatGPT is built for it. Many people who use both reach for them at different moments: Perplexity for the finding-out phase and ChatGPT for the producing phase.

Are the sources Perplexity cites reliable?
The sources exist and the links work, which is already more than can be said for the invented citations of an assistant without search. What it does not guarantee is that the source is good or that it read it correctly: it can accurately cite a weak article. You still need to open the link for anything that matters.
