What is Perplexity?
Perplexity combines a chatbot with a search engine: it answers questions in real time and cites the sources behind every fact, so you can check them yourself. It is ideal for researching, comparing information and getting up to speed on a topic without opening twenty tabs. Its Deep Research mode chains dozens of searches to produce long reports, and its free plan is one of the most generous among AI search engines.
Pros
- Answers with verifiable sources
- Real-time information
- Good free plan
Cons
- Less capable than ChatGPT/Claude on creative tasks
- The sources are not always the best ones
What Perplexity is like in practice
Where it stands out
Every claim comes with its link, and that changes how you use it: you can verify in one click and quickly discard a poorly grounded answer, instead of trusting it or checking everything separately. For research, writing with sources or anything you will cite, that detail saves far more time than it looks.
Where it falls short
A source existing does not mean it is good or correctly read: it can accurately cite a weak article, and that still demands your judgement. Outside searching it falls short: ask it to rewrite an email or debug code and it will answer, but that is not where it shines, nor does it claim to be.
How its pricing works
The free plan covers ordinary searching easily. The paid tier mainly adds search depth and access to several models, and only pays off if searching well is a core part of your job: research, market analysis, journalism. For day-to-day queries, a general assistant's free tier covers the same ground.
Is Perplexity right for you?
Yes, if…
You research and need to check where each fact comes from: it answers with real-time information while citing its sources. It saves opening twenty tabs to cross-check a topic.
No, if…
You are going to write, code or create: ChatGPT and Claude are clearly better there. And it is worth checking the sources it cites, because they are not always the strongest.
