The differences that actually matter
Integration with your files versus writing quality
Gemini reads your Gmail and Drive, so it answers about your own material without you uploading it. Claude does not connect to your accounts: you paste or upload whatever you want it to read. In exchange, for long-form writing in Spanish Claude delivers a more publishable result with less editing.
One searches the web by default and the other does not
Gemini queries Google as it answers, which for questions about recent events is a direct advantage. Claude starts from what it learned during training unless you supply the information. For writing, analysis or coding it makes no difference; for anything depending on this week's data, it does.
What you get without paying
Gemini's free plan is among the most generous on the market. Claude's has daily limits you hit quickly if you use it for work, and it is a real reason why many people who prefer it end up paying. If the budget is zero, this outweighs every other difference.

Which handles long documents better?
Both accept very large documents and are comparable in raw capacity. The difference is in use: Claude follows a complex instruction given at the start about how to treat the document more faithfully, and Gemini wins when the document is already in your Drive and you would rather not move it.
Which suits me if I work in Google Workspace?
Gemini, almost without argument: the saving from not exporting and re-uploading files is daily and adds up. The exception is if your main job is writing text that gets published, because there Claude's writing quality repays the extra step of pasting the content in by hand.
