Rank Math or Semrush?

Comparing an $8/month plugin with a $117/month suite only makes sense if you are clear they do different things. Rank Math optimises your pages from inside WordPress and its free version covers what other plugins charge for. Semrush tells you what to write about, what the competition is doing and how you appear in chatbot answers.

The differences that actually matter

A plugin and an analysis platform

Rank Math lives inside your WordPress and handles the site's technical side: titles, tags, structured data, sitemap, redirects. Semrush sits outside and analyses the market: what people search, who competes, what links exist. They barely overlap.

One is nearly free

Rank Math has a free version covering the essentials for most sites, and the paid one is cheap. Semrush is one of the most expensive subscriptions in the sector. Comparing them on price makes no sense because they solve different problems.

What happens if you only have one

Without Rank Math or an equivalent plugin, your WordPress emits poor tags and incomplete structured data, and that is hard to compensate for. Without Semrush you can still do SEO using Search Console, which is free and gives real data about your site. The plugin is more essential than the suite.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both?

If you have WordPress, the plugin yes, at least in its free version. Semrush is optional and only pays off if SEO is a significant part of your business: for a small site, Search Console covers the data side at no cost.

Does Rank Math improve my rankings on its own?

It sorts out the technical foundation so Google understands your site properly, which stops you losing ground to errors. What it does not do is create content or earn links, which is where competing is decided. It is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one.
