What is HeyGen?
HeyGen is an AI-powered video creation platform that lets you produce professional videos with realistic digital avatars, synthesised narration and multilingual support, with no cameras or production crew. Built for marketing, sales, L&D and enterprise teams that need to produce video at scale with minimal effort. It stands out for its high-quality avatars (Avatar IV/V), natural voice cloning, automatic translation with lip sync in 175+ languages, and a robust API for automation.
Pros
- Highly realistic avatars with Avatar IV/V and natural lip sync in 175+ languages
- Professional-quality voice cloning that preserves the original tone and accent
- Robust, well-documented API for enterprise automation and integrations (HubSpot, Zapier, Make)
- Generous free plan for testing, no credit card required
- Fast generation: many videos are ready in 1-3 minutes
Cons
- Confusing credit system: premium avatars (Avatar IV) burn 20 credits/minute, limiting real output
- Mandatory watermark on the free plan; removing it requires upgrading to Creator ($29/month)
- Extra costs scale quickly for teams: the Business plan is $149/month plus $20/seat/month
- Reports of stability problems: renders getting stuck, editor bugs and occasional outages
What HeyGen is like in practice
Where it stands out
Its most valuable feature is not the avatar but the translation: you upload a video of yourself and it comes out speaking another language in your own voice with synced lips. For reaching new markets without re-recording or hiring narration, that alone justifies the subscription. The avatars are also expressive and work well in short pieces.
Where it falls short
In shots with broad gestures or strong emotion it still shows that this is not a recording. The translation is good but not perfect: review the translated script before publishing, because a nuance error delivered by your own face is worse than a badly placed subtitle.
How its pricing works
Plans scale by generated video minutes per month and that is the number to watch, not the price: a corporate course exhausts the entry plan quickly. There is very limited free use for testing. Cloning your own face or voice is fine; someone else's requires their express written permission.
Is HeyGen right for you?
Yes, if…
You need presenter videos without filming: training, sales or marketing, and especially if you have to translate the same video into several languages while keeping the voice and lip sync.
No, if…
You produce video continuously on a tight budget: the credit system escalates with premium avatars and the Business plan is expensive per seat.
Frequently asked questions
Does HeyGen have a free plan?
Yes, a Free plan with 3 videos/month (1 min max), 720p, a watermark and access to 500+ avatars. No credit card required.
What makes HeyGen different from Synthesia or D-ID?
HeyGen stands out for more natural avatars, better voice cloning and better pricing for small teams. Synthesia is stronger for enterprise; D-ID is cheaper but less realistic.
Can I use HeyGen for commercial content?
