Where it stands out
It is built into Windows and the Edge browser with nothing to install, and it is free for general use: for quick queries while you work, it is the assistant you already have. It searches the web as it answers, so it stays current on topics depending on recent information.
Where it falls short
It is a layer over other people's models and it trails the original products in features and in when they arrive. For demanding work — long documents, writing that gets published, coding — any dedicated assistant performs better. And the naming confusion with the business version leads people to expect things the free one does not do.

General use is free, which already makes it a reasonable option if you do not want to pay and use Windows. The version integrated into Word, Excel and Outlook is a different product billed separately per user: do not confuse the two when comparing, because the capability gap is large.
