Several tools only allow commercial use on paid plans, and some keep your generated images public unless you pay for a higher tier. If you are going to use them for a client or a product, read the terms before generating, not after.
Whether it can render text inside the image
For years this was every generator's weak point and it is still uneven. If you need posters, covers, thumbnails or anything with legible words, test it first: the gap between a tool that renders text properly and one that produces mangled letters saves you hours of retouching.
How much control you have over the result
Writing a description and accepting whatever comes out works for a one-off image. Real work means repeating a style, keeping the same character across images or editing just one part. That is where tools genuinely diverge: some give you reference images, masks and variations, others only a regenerate button.
Watermarks and output resolution
Many free plans deliver images watermarked, at low resolution, or both — fine for testing, useless for publishing. Check the final file size before building a workflow on top of it.
